Choose Mac Desktop Picture, Solid Colour or Your Own

You can simply choose the picture that’s displayed on your desktop. Your Mac comes with dozens of desktop pictures to choose from. You have many ways how to customise you Mac Desktop.

Each Mac OS has its own featured image.

Quick tips how to customise your Mac Desktop

  • To quickly access the Desktop & Screen Saver window simply press with the right click anywhere on the desktop and select Change Desktop Background. 
  • To quickly use a picture you have in the Photos app, select the picture in Photos, click the Share button  in the Photos toolbar, then choose Set Desktop Picture.
  • You can use a picture you see on the web as your desktop picture. Control-click the image in the browser window, then select Use Image as Desktop Picture.
  • To use any picture from any computer folder as Desktop Picture, right click on it and select the bottom option Set Desktop Picture. 

Desktop & Screen Saver Customisations 

To see all of the option how to customise your desktop and screensaver you have to go to system preferences on your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Desktop & Screen Saver, then click Desktop.

Mac pictures or colours:

Pictures and colours that come with your Mac: Click the disclosure triangle next to Apple, then select Desktop Pictures or Colours to see thumbnails of available pictures and colors. You have here to choose from dynamic desktop which are changing throughout the day based on your current location. If Location Services is turned off in Privacy preferences, the picture changes based on the time zone specified in Date & Time preferences. 

You can also choose from bunch of beautiful photograph provided by apple or if you want to have it clean that just simple colour would work for you.

Your pictures: 

Of course you can set your own picture, just from photos of specific folder. Click the disclosure triangle next to Photos (or iPhoto if available). If your pictures are in the Pictures or another folder, click the triangle next to Folders, then select a folder.

To add a folder, click the Add button, navigate to and select the folder, then click Choose.
On the right, click the picture you want to use. 

The desktop immediately changes, so you can see how the picture looks. When you use one of your own pictures, you can choose to have it fill the screen, be centered, or otherwise arranged. 

It’s easy to click around and try different pictures and arrangements until you find the one you like best.

  • Tip: Maybe you like more wallpapers you have more pictures you want on the desktop background and you cant decide which one to use. I have a solution, you can actually choose different wallpaper for each desktop you have open. I always work with 2 or 3 desktops a like to have different pictures there. Not only for fun but you can distinguish your work desktop, you movie desktop and so on. 

Screensaver

The other tab in Desktop & Screen Saver is to customise your screensaver. Select a style of your screen saver on the left. 

On the right side choose a source folder to use for slideshow pictures. To have the pictures appear in a random order, select the “Shuffle slide order” tickbox. You can choose from one of the default collections or choose your own folder. 

On the bottom you have more settings to customise. Select how long your Mac can be inactive before the screen saver starts. If you don’t want a screen saver to start, choose Never.

You can also tick on Display the time with the screen saver.

If you click on hot corners you can set to Start or stop the screen saver when you move the pointer to a screen corner.

  • Tip: Want to see how a screen saver looks full screen? Select a screen saver, move the pointer over the thumbnail and then click the Preview button what appears on it. To stop the screen saver and return to the preference pane, just move the pointer.
